Week of Direct Action Against Alabama
On Tuesday, November 15, 2011, 13 protestors, including some undocumented students and parents, staged a powerful act of civil disobedience in Mobile, Alabama. These courageous individuals came from all over the nation to protest the country’s toughest anti-immigrant legislation.
The group was arrested for sitting down in the middle of the street in front of Alabama’s Statehouse and for failing to leave the inside of the Alabama Statehouse. The arrested include: Martin Unzueta, 55, of Chicago, IL; Belen Rebelledo, 39, of Detroit MI; Alma Diaz, 30, of Ohio; Jaime Guzman, 25, of Oregon; Catalina Rios, 19, of Detroit, MI; Ernesto Zumaya, 25, of Los Angeles, CA; Myasha Arellano, 18, of San Fernando Valley, CA; Krsna Avila, 23, of Oakland, CA; Fernanda Marroquin, 22, of Philadelphia, PA; Cesar Marroquin, 21, of Philadelphia, PA; and Cynthia Perez, 27, of Indianapolis, IN.
The students hoped to bring to light the failure of the Obama administration to maintain their promise of prosecutorial discretion and the plight of undocumented students. Mohammad Abdollahi, co-founder of DREAM Activist, explained that the purpose of the demonstration was for their voice “to be heard.”
All the protestors were bailed out and ICE has yet to charge any of the undocumented protestors.
