New Laws, New Hotline Go Live for 2012 « About Immigration.
On January 1st, many of the new immigration-related laws in various states went into effect. The controversial E-Verify program will be mandatory for certain employers in Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, Louisiana, and Tennessee. In California, state and local governments are now prohibited from making E-Verify mandatory, and immigrant students will be eligible for private financial aid to attend public colleges.
Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has also just announced a new hotline for immigrants and US citizens who have been wrongfully detained by local police or ICE officials. The new policy makes it mandatory that local police inform detained immigrants in writing about the hotline and that no one may be detained for more than 48 hours.
